Eating Fruit and Veg

They have changed it again! How many Fruit and Veg should we be eating a day?

In 2014 we should all of been eating at least 5 a day. Now in 2016 less than 3 years later it has now gone up to 7 a day.

I hear you say 7 a day! I don’t even manage that myself let alone the children! We manage at least 4-5 a day.

We have started to encrease the amount of Fruit and Veg we eat as a family, and not just one colour of Fruit and veg the mix of diffrent colours gives diffrent benefits to you and your child.

A potion size for a adult and child is actually the same size as your hand scrunched up into a ball. That is how much veg, fruit, pasta, ,meat etc you should actually be eating and some people say eating up to 5 times a day too!

This week we have actually managed to eat 7-8 a day! Go me, and the children and the hubs!

Bear has eaten mostly fruit products and to be honest I don’t mind they have been lot’s of diffrent colours. Bell has eaten fruit and veg.

We have mixed the fruit and veg into diffrent way’s we eat them. There are many way’s to get fruit and veg into the diet.

Hidden Vegetables

Hubs doesn’t like corguette so I gratit into a stew. cassorole or a spag bol. This can also be used for other veg such as mushrooms, onions, leeks, peppers and tomatoes (maybe use a blender to chop the tomatoes up or it could get messy!)

Smoothies

There are so many type’s of smoothies in the shops now a day’s with a mix of fruit and veg in. Bear doesn’t like beetroot but he will drink a smoothie with beetroot in! You can also make your own from fresh fruit and veg so simple but can get expensive unless you are like me and try and catch the reduced section!

Making Kebabs

This is our favourite of all time! Great for picnic’s and for having friends around. It can be cheap or expensive depending on what fruits you choose.

Frozen or Fresh

There are so many choices of fruit and veg. You can buy frozen, fresh, tinned and Jarred. There is certainly no right or wrong choices to this. I would say check the salt and sugar level’s in the item as it can be very high!

Fruit juices

Great for children and adults alike. But as I have said check the salt and sugar levels.

Watching I can Cook On Cbeebies or other cookery programs for children.

We have had to buy the I can cook cook book as Bell and Bear love the program and the ideas are so healthy and yummy! There is also a great choice of cook books for parent’s but don’t forget many chef’s have started to produce cook books suitable for family life.

Toddler groups

Many toddler groups still have juice and biscuits. I am trying to find toddler groups in my area which do Fruit or healthier snacks instead as it will help to encourage eating fruit or a healthier snack.

I sound like the perfect parent! I am seriously not no parent is perfect!

Sunday’s have seemed to turn into sweet and popcorn day and the fruit and veg also tend to be halfed! (whoops!) We also have endless supply of ketcup and BBQ sauce in the fridge too! (and its not reduced sugar!!!!)

I am very anti adding salt into any cooking, I also try and make any cake’s we have from scratch as i know exactly what is going into it.

I have been watching lot’s of programs on what actually happen’s to our food and it is very much a eye openner. I am seriously consdiering changing our families diet to either vegan or Vegetariam but for this to work Bear needs to start eating more Veg!
